Lao Di Fang: Penang Aunty Char Koay Teow

Picture show above is a plate of char koay teow with extra bean sprout a.k.a taugeh :P
Looks delicious ? Hehe…let me introduce you Penang Aunty Char Koay Teow (what’s written at the stall signboard). Lately the price for a plate of char koay teow at areas near where I live is increasing. Now to enjoy a plate of char koay teow, you need to pay approximately RM2.30 – RM2.50 depends on location. However, with the price you pay the food is so called not worth it. Why ? Read on. Hand-drawn-map using MS Paint is attached below if you want to know where is the location.
Last time, with around RM2 – RM2.20 you can enjoy a plate of nice char koay teow. Anyway, the price is increasing lately without a good reason. Some giving reason such as petrol price increased and so on. How about our salary ? Nobody increase our salary for us but the food is getting more expensive.
For char koay teow at mainland side which means Butterworth side not including Penang island, normally you can get is only a plate of char koay teow with few small prawns, slices of “lap cheong” (how do we call in english ? chinese wax sausage ? :D) and some cockles (kerang in Malay). You hardly and very rare can find a plate of char koay teow with BIG PRAWNS ~ However, there’s 1 stall selling char koay teow with big prawns ~ yummy at Lao Di Fang coffeeshop, Chai Leng Park(map below). The stall name is “Penang Aunty Char Koay Teow” (i think the main/original stall is from Penang island ? I dunno where the stall, maybe should ask my friends staying at Penang island)
The char koay teow there is selling for RM3 per plate with 2 BIG PRAWNS, a few slices of “lap cheong” and some slice of squids. Can you imagine just RM3 per plate, i don’t mind paying extra than normal char koay teow price i can here because i can get to eat 2 big prawns, wakakak which is worth it!!. You can try and compare, with additional about 50 – 70 cent, can get 2 big prawns, where can you buy 2 big prawns for 70 cent ? Which market ? Tell me, I’ll go and buy…..keke.
There’s even a choice of duck egg if you like. (i never try before, i’m sure it’s a lil extra charge, mayb i’ll ask next time). However, I’m not sure the aunty got include cockles in char koay teow or not because when I ordered that time, there’s no cockles inside my char koay teow, anyway I don’t bother much because I don’t eat them :D
Note: I’m sure few slices of squids is worth more than few cockles if the aunty really dun put in cockles in her char koay teow, anyway i’ll update this post with more information next time i ask the aunty, okay ?

Note: Read the guide below for more details.
How to go there?
1 – This map starts from exits after Penang Bridge, and you’ll see Pacific Hypermarket on your left. There’s a traffic light. Go straight after the traffic light.
2 – You’ll see an indian temple on your left after the traffic light. Keep going straight. You’ll see Pearl View Hotel and Fajar Supermarket on your right.
3 – Later on, you’ll see 2 petrol station on your left, Shell and Esso. (not in map)
4 – You’ll see a flyover on your left and on top of the flyover there’s a few traffic lights. Keep to your right and make a U-turn according to the traffic lights. (not in map)
5 – After making an U-turn, now you’ll see a row of shophouses on your left. You’ll see there’s a few banks and 1 of them is CIMB bank. Make a left turn at the junction in front Fajar.
6 – Okay, now the roads a bit complicated because it’s one way street for each road. Make a left turn at the third junction on your left.
7 – If you see the map properly, you can turn into the 1st junction on your left but don’t take that. Then the 2nd junction on your left is the opposite way traffic, you cannot turn into that road anyway. Then you’ll see the 3rd junction on your left, this time turn into the road, it’s one way street.
8 – You need to go till the end of the road, turn right once, and then turn right again for the second time when you see the 1st junction on your right.
9 – If you notice, actually the Lao Di Fang is located at the end of the 4th junction’s road. However, you cannot turn into that road because it’s the opposite way traffic. So, you need to turn into the 3rd junction earlier to make a U-turn into the 4th junction.
10 – Hola, finally you reach the place! The shop is highlighted with orange color, if you reach there, you can read from the shop’s signboard. I’m sure you’re not that dumb to get into the wrong coffeeshop which is just exactly behind Lao Di Fang.
Note: Sorry if my explanation above is not good enough or the map I drawn is confusing. Anyway, I’ve tried my best to draw as clear as I can or explain the easiest way to you.
